You know you live in Nebraska...

(courtesy of my friend Heather, courtesy of Jeff Foxworthy)

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through May.

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there.

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time.

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number.

If "Vacation" means going anywhere south of GRAND ISLAND for the weekend.

If you measure distance in squares of farm land.

If you know several people who have hit a cow more than once. (my brother!)

If you have gone from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again.

If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching.

If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked.

If you carry jumpers in your car and your wife knows how to use them.

If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

If the I-80 speed limit is 75 mph -- you're going 90 and everybody is passing you.

If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction.

If you have more hours on your snow blower than miles on your car.

If you find 10 degrees "a little chilly."

If you listen/attend/watch a Husker football game even if you're not a football fan!

(I added that last one myself - it's so easy to get caught up in Husker-mania!)
Enjoy the list and pass it on! :)

The Matrix and Muppets Combine

This isn't really relevant, but is sure effective in getting a laugh! (It helps if you have seen Matrix and/or know about the Muppets.)

The Muppet Matrix

I love spoofs of any kind, and this one is GREAT!

The pills are coming...

(throat clear - throat clear - cough - cough - cough) Maybe if I had taken all these crazy looking pills I would feel better today! Eric passed along his wretched cold to me! (I had just finished saying on Sunday "I haven't gotten it yet") I did have activities to pursue today, but now feel like moving from this computer chair would require too much effort. But, I must sally forth and try to get on with it! Enjoy your healthy day and think of me in my misery! (hack - hack)

Cleaing Update

Well, suffice it to say, I did not accomplish all I set out to do. I did clean the closets, and started papering the kitchen cabinets (but ran out of paper!). No financial meeting set up yet with the "CEO" but there's still time in the week! This turned out to be a VERY busy week at work and I donated alot of extra time to the job instead of the house. Not what I had planned, but at least everything got done at work. What's the best way to stay motivated for house projects? I'll let you know when I find out!

The Joys of Fall Cleaning

I'm officially starting the "Clean Sweep" for this week. This is what I want to accomplish by Friday:

1. Clean out kitchen cabinets and re-contact paper them.

2. Clean out clothes (and coat) closet and donate items to Goodwill.

3. Make a list of our worldly possessions for insurance purposes

4. Catch up on ALL laundry and paperwork (the paperwork has been piling up for a couple weeks now!)

5. Reevaluate our budget and have a "financial meeting" with Eric to discuss. (It makes it feel official if we schedule a meeting.)

I know that list is not long, but each task if very labor intensive! So, I'll update towards the end of the week and let you know how everything turned out! This is a great time of the year to do those tasks that pile up - it's cool and today it's cloudy, so I'm ok with staying inside for the day. Have a great week everyone!

The Highs and Lows

Today has been composed of mountain-top or pit of the valley experiences. It seemed like every other moment / activity / piece of information brought me joy or tears. There was no middle ground today - just the ups and downs. I feel at odds with a couple people around me and don't know how to make the situations better. I feel God whispering "Keep your focus on Me. Don't be distracted by the things around you - I know the plans I have for you." But, it is only a whisper - and every other thing is screaming at me! If you read this today, please pray for me. (Or tomorrow, I'm sure I'll still need prayer then!)

"'For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you,' says the Lord, 'thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.'"

Camping Days!

Friday started off our weekend very busily as we ran 5 errands in preparation for our departure from Lincoln! So, instead of leaving Lincoln around 1:00 or 2:00 as we had hoped, we ended up heading down the interstate at 3:30 instead! I am choosing to believe this tardiness on our part wouldn't have made a difference to the weather at Lake Calamus when we arrived 3 1/2 hours later. Even though we had seen the rain on the windshield for the last 75 miles of our trip, we didn't realize the the temperature had also been dropping 10 degrees every hour. When we arrived at the lake, we noticed the water was covered in "white caps." Thinking nothing of it and not noticing how hard it was REALLY raining, we traveled through 3 different campsites looking for "the ONE" - void of people, close to water, and some trees for protection. (Little did we know how MUCH we would need that "protection.")
On the furthest side of the 10 mile diameter lake, we found our site. Eric and I hopped gleefully from the truck to do a close-up inspection.......only to do to quick hop right back in! Driving rain, freezing temps, and frigid wind! (We had left Lincoln with 80 degree weather and I was wearing shorts and t-shirt!) Gasping for breath, we sat dumbfounded. What do we do? Wait for the rain to subside? Turn around and see if there was a motel in the area? Go home? Or set up camp any way? If you chose Option #4, you would be correct. Eric thought we should get our ginormous (gigantic+enormous) tarp set up as a rain shield first.
So, being the "helpful" wife I am, I set out to get the tarps from the camping tub and he scouted a spot for the "shield." Unfortunately, we had picked a camping site with only 3 trees - and tarps have 4 corners. After battling the wind, rain and the tarp (which was given superpowers by the wind and rain) for almost an hour and getting nowhere, we moved our attention to the tents. By this point, we are both soaked - my hair is dripping in my eyes and the ONE sweatshirt I brought with me is heavy with water and failing to keep me warm. At some point in the set-up process, we also discovered that the one thing I asked Eric to throw in his clothes bag (clean t-shirts) was missing! He was wearing his ONLY shirt and it was also soaked and wet.
The tents went up with minor setbacks - mostly because my fingers were too numb to be of much help to me - and we quickly tied all our belongings under a tarp for the night. We talked about chucking it all in and heading back to Lincoln (this was around 11:00 p.m.) and I said "We could be at IHOP by 2:00 and have pancakes!" But we ended up staying that night and ate cereal on our air mattress by the bowlful. I'm glad we stayed (now) because it turned into a great couple of days. The next day, the sky was clear and we had perfect weather for the next 2 days. We hiked with the dogs, took a LONG nap and went wading in Calamus River. Sitting around the campfire was WONDERFUL in the morning when my nose was still frozen from that night before and we made an emergency trip into Burwell for chocolate chip cookies. All-in-all, we had a fun, relaxing weekend that left us refreshed and ready to face our real lives again.

Aah - I've had these days...

So much to post...so little time!

I actually have plenty of "time" today, but need to get on with the morning routine, so, quick items of interest:

#1 - I am applying to UNL today! To be part of the communications program!
#2 - Last night, Eric "approved" the purchase of a new toy for me - an MP3 player! I am really excited! I have already loaded 37 songs and will be listening to my soundtrack all day! :) (Only because it was over $50 do Eric and I both have to agree on a purchase!)
#3 - Eric and I are actually taking a weekend off! This Friday, we are leaving for Lake Calamus is central NE. I know, it is Labor Day and the parks will be packed, but I am praying we get a quiet, out-of-the-way site for the weekend. Eric especially needs a complete vegetative vacation, so hopefully this will do it! :)

Have a great Monday! I promise you'll get a nice, long post before we head out camping!

Keep Commenting!

Just a quick post to say: please keep commenting! If you think your comments aren't getting through, they really are! I have my site set to moderate comments, so, when you comment, they come to my email first and then I post them to the blog! This way, I can prevent spam comments and I get to read your comments as soon as you make them! (I win both ways - just a little confusing for my reader base!) So, thanks for reading - I'll be back to post more interesting information tomorrow!

Where to begin?

Sorry for the lack of posts lately...Eric and I have been housesitting at an acquaintance-of-a-friend's house for the past 10 days. Even though we got to spend the day and early evening at our own house, the owners wanted us to sleep at their house to thwart their teenage sons' parties while they were gone. Things went pretty well for the first 7 days and then we had to break up activities for 3 nights in a row - these kids are 17 & 20 years old! And they couldn't obey the ONE rule their parents had set out: "No friends in the house while we're gone." So, we had a few late nights waiting up to make sure no other "friends" got in the house and tonight will be the first night in our own bed in over a week!
New subject: Sunday began our first day of Running Week 9 - running 13 minutes, walking 2 minutes. It actually wasn't as hard as I thought. It is a huge jump from 9 to 13 minutes though! I always want to give up at about 23 minutes into the whole workout - any suggestions to keep myself motivated? Eric tries, but all he says is "You can do it!" and at that point I don't feel I can! GRRRR! I think I really need music - when all I hear is "SLAP - SLAP (WHEEZE IN!) SlAP -SLAP (WHEEZE OUT!) SLAP - SLAP (WHEEZE IN!) SlAP -SLAP (WHEEZE OUT!)SLAP - SLAP (WHEEZE IN!) SlAP -SLAP (WHEEZE OUT!) SLAP - SLAP (WHEEZE IN!) SlAP -SLAP (WHEEZE OUT!) SLAP - SLAP (WHEEZE IN!) SlAP -SLAP (WHEEZE OUT!)SLAP - SLAP (WHEEZE IN!) SlAP -SLAP (WHEEZE OUT!)" I feel like laying down on the gravel and giving up forever! :) (Wasn't that little description even driving you crazy? ) So, let me know if you think of anything motivational for me!
New Subject #2: I am also thinking a little thought about finishing out my education. I have taken 1 year of college classes and really think I need to get my bachelors. Eric and I have been discussing...and discussing...and discussing our futures lately. After contemplating and praying a bit more, I have a feeling this is where my road will lead. It feels strange for me to go back to school full time - I always thought after we got married, I'd get pregnant(and pregnant) and would be raising 2 sets of twins by now! I just need to adjust my mind to our current circumstances and be ready to run where God leads. I don't want to follow His will reluctantly, dragging my feet or grumbling about what could have been or what could be. I want to be ready to sprint in the right direction (that's why I've been running!) JK! :) Pray for our upcoming decisions - Eric and I both have BIG forks in our road! I think it looks like a double-branched fork - there are more than 2 options: (ex: AA AB BB BA) Lots of exciting things coming (I think!) and I want to know we're in keeping with God's plan through it all.

The First Fitness Update!

It has been MANY weeks since I reported that Eric and I were going to try to get into shape! :) And yes, for a while we just loafed around the same as always, continually saying "We'll do ________(physical activity) tomorrow." But today, I am pleased to announce that we are beginning our SEVENTH week of running! I don't think we have ever stuck to any exercise program as long. Besides the constant aching in my previously neglected leg muscles, (which I try to ignore) I feel great! For anyone who knew me before the birth of my blog, you know I had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue and was sleeping 10 hours a night and 2-3 hours during the day. Since beginning our running regimen, I haven't napped AT ALL during the day and have had energy to spare! If you think about how hot it has been here for the past 3 weeks (90-100 degrees every day), this is amazing! The heat hasn't drained me and I feel better than I have in a loooooooong time. So, that is my "Ode to Running" post. I hope this inspires you to get out and exercise, even though it is the middle of summer - your body will thank you!

A little creativity

I've been working on these pictures to use during our service at church this week. We've been studying Ephesians and these 2 verse jumped out at me. Pairing words with pictures really helps Scripture come alive for me - I hope you like them!

Sing Praise!

"But I will sing of Your strength,
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.
O my Strength, I sing praise to You;
You, O God, are my fortress, my loving God."
Psalm 59:16-17

Happy Birthday Eric!

Yesterday, Eric celebrated his 26th year on the planet! The scary thing we realized last night as we were falling asleep is that he is now starting on his 27th year! Wow! He is now older than me (for another six months) and we had a great time celebrating with Scott and Renee' last night.

Celebrate Your Independence!

We had a great day on July 4th. We started the day with Eric fixing our deck umbrella (which I had left open in a windstorm!) and working in the yard. I prepared TONS of food for our lunch with my family (we're still eating it) and we had a great meal with "bombs bursting in air." The kids had a great time shooting off a zillion fireworks and then we swam for hours at Paul & Barb's pool - they were very generous to open their yard to 15 extra people! After swimming, it was off to Oak Lake Park for the City of Lincoln's "Uncle Sam Jam" with the BIG fireworks. We had great day, although we are recovering from Tuesday - and today is Saturday! :) Happy Independence Day everyone!

This isn't a Rick Warren bandwagon...

The big name in evangelical circles right now is Rick Warren. He is the author of "The Purpose Driven Life" and many others studies and books. Even after reading "The Purpose Driven Life" I was still skeptical of his "ministry." How could someone who was making so much money and who had so much influence, keep his focus on what truly mattered? I received a forward this morning that answered my questions and turned my whole day around. I've enclosed excerpts from that email below. I hope you'll be encouraged and inspired.
"People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity. We were made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in heaven day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body - but not the end of me. I may live 60 to 100 years on earth, but I am going to spend trillions of years in eternity. This is the warm-up act - the dress rehearsal. God wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity.
We were made by God and for God, and until you figure that out, life isn't going to make sense. Life is a series of problems: Either you are in one now, you're just coming out of one, or you're getting ready to go into another one. The reason for this is that God is more interested in your character than your comfort. God is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your life happy. We can be reasonably happy here on earth, but that's not the goal of life. The goal is to grow in character, in Christ likeness.
I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don't believe that anymore. Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it's kind of like two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life. No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on. And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for. You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems. If you focus on your problems, you're going into self-centeredness, "which is my problem, my issues, my pain." But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get your focus off yourself and onto God and others. You have to learn to deal with both the good and the bad of life. Actually, sometimes learning to deal with the good is harder.
For instance, this past year, all of a sudden, when the book [The Purpose Driven Life] sold 15 million copies, it made me instantly very wealthy. It also brought a lot of notoriety that I had never had to deal with before. I don't think God gives you money or notoriety for your own ego or for you to live a life of ease. So I began to ask God what He wanted me to do with this money, notoriety and influence. He gave me two different passages that helped me decide what to do: II Corinthians 9 and Psalm 72. First, in spite of all the money coming in, we would not change our lifestyle one bit. We made no major purchases. Second, about midway through last year, I stopped taking a salary from the church. Third, we set up foundations to fund an initiative we call The Peace Plan to plant churches, equip leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and educate the next generation. Fourth, I added up all that the church had paid me in the 24 years since I started the church, and I gave it all back. It was liberating to be able to serve God for free.
We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for possessions? Popularity? Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Or am I going to be driven by God's purposes (for my life)? When I get up in the morning, I sit on the side of my bed and say, God, if I don't get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better. God didn't put me on earth just to fulfill a to-do list. He's more interested in what I am than what I do. That's why we're called human beings, not human doings.
In happy moments, PRAISE GOD; in difficult moments, SEEK GOD; in quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD; in painful moments, TRUST GOD; in every moment, THANK GOD."
Rick Warren

Camp Joshua 2006 (a.k.a. The Year of the Bugs)

Eric and I got back from Camp Joshua in Lees Summit, MO! This is a great camp for kids who have Tourette Syndrome, Asbergers, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), ADD and ADHD. My personal opinion for ADD kids is that they just need more activity in their lives! (And switching between activities quicker.) Eric and I were in the same cabin (as a "family unit") with a 6 little boys (11 years old) and they were overall great kids! I know now why God chooses VERY FEW couples to bless with sextuplets! I can't imagine having 6 kids at the same age all at once! One week was enough for me! The week was fun - although Eric and I came home with 45 bug bites each! A fun game to play with your spouse: "I'll Count Your Bugbites if You Count Mine!" Here are some great pics of the week:

Isaiah 1

I realized this morning that I have never read through the book of Isaiah - only a few verses here and there. What a lashing Isaiah gives the Israelites! But, as I read, a few verses stuck out to me:

"Stop bringing meaningless offerings!
Your incense is detestable to me.
New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations -
I cannot bear your evil assemblies...
They have become a burden to me;
I am weary of bearing them.
...wash and make yourself clean.
Take your evil deeds out of my sight!
Sopt doing wrong, learn to do right!
Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless,
plead the case of the widow.
'Come now, let us reason together,'
says the Lord.
'Though your sins be as scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the best from the land;
but if you resist and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.'
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken."
Isaiah 1: 13-14,16-20
I have been reminded that it is not the "motions" of Christianity or religion that turn God towards us - it is the constant real heart attitude we show in our lives. "Learn to do right...seek justice, encourage the oppressed." This should be our constant motivation in all we do!

Memorial Day 2006

Memorial Day 2006
(Some people couldn't handle the 100 degree weather -
notice who is at the head of the table!)
I think this is the first good smile I've gotten out of Kristin in years!
(She usually has a intentionally goofy expression on her face)

Renee' braved the heat with me...

...as did Sara and Ryan (her "friend")...

...and Great Aunt Beth - with her Great Dr. Pepper...

... and Bridget the Beagle.

There were many courageous people at this holiday gathering!

Along with courageous, there was also a silly squirt present:

(notice the many different moods)

I hope you all had a great holiday weekend!

Still loving the yard!

Here are the promised "Before and After" pics! I can't believe what a GREAT difference this has made! I look outside in the morning and seeing such a huge project completed makes my whole day happy!

Side note: One-Pan Taco casserole (from previous post) was FANTASTIC!!

Also, check out our adorable dogs:
Sadie is so funny - she tries to be super independent (only allowing us to pet her when SHE wants us to and never seeming to need us except at food times) - but here she is sitting by my feet instead of running outside, even though both doors are open. Longingly looking outside, but content to keep me company.
And this is the "baby" of the family:
She KNOWS how cute she looks with those "sad puppy" eyes and she uses them frequently to her advantage! And usually it's after she has pulled all the dirty kleenexes and trash out of the wastebasket - and she gets out of a punishment! We may not be the best dog-trainers in the world, but we sure like Nala and her little puppy sweetness (even though she's almost 2 years old!)

What's for dinner tonight?

This is a new recipe I am trying out for tonight:
I hope it's good because it looks really easy!
I'll let you know after it's done!

15-Minute Taco in a Pan
Prep: 10 min. Total: 24 min.

1 lb. extra lean ground beef
2 c. water
1 pkg. taco seasoning mix
2 c. Minute Rice, uncooked
1 c. Mexican-style Shredded Cheese
2 c. shredded lettuce
2 c. chopped tomatoes

Brown meat in large nonstick skillet; drain
Add water and seasoning mix; stir. Bring to boil
Stir in rice. Sprinkle with cheese; cover. Reduce heat to low; simmer 5 min.
Top with lettuce and tomatoes.

4 servings

Optional: top with coarsely crushed tortilla chips and ¼ c. sour cream.

A job WELL done!

Eric and I have been WORKING hard (I was so sore on Saturday evening, I could barely move from my spot on the living room floor!) We have spent the last 2 weekends working on our backyard: first, updating and adding to our flower garden (pics above) and then powerwashing, scrubbing and staining our entire deck. If you had asked me if we had a big deck, I would have told you "no" but now I know how huge it actually is! And we have spent time on every square inch of it! As soon as we get a nice sunny day, I'll post our before and after pics of the deck - a GREAT transformation! Now, we really want to get cooking on our house painting! It really needs it - especially compared to our great "new" deck! But, if we don't have the time to paint, I will be extremely content with our great updates we have made!
Happy spring everyone!

Have you ___________ today?

"A new command I give you: Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
John 13:34-35
